  1. Hi, I would like to recommend the Wombles series written by Elisabeth Beresford. There are 5 books in the series and they were originally written in the late 60s/early 70s. Do not let that put you off. They have recently been re-published and they are as relevant and fun today as when I read them as a child. Also, do not be put off if you have watched the TV series. These books are beautifully written and contain many thought provoking themes. Based in London, England, the Wombles tidy up after human beings. They recycle and reuse, have to move home when a large building project threatens their burrow and have to find alternative food production sources when they find themselves running out of food. The full series sees the Wombles go round the world (great for geography) and work on many an invention. They also have to work together cooperatively and draw on each other's strengths and weaknesses (great for Peace Education). Best of all, they are fun to read and really appeal to this age group. This is an excellent book which teaches children that the more you use your brain and the more you challenge it, the stronger it will be.
